A 16-year-old girl walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage wearing ordinary clothes, looking nervous and speaking quietly to the judges. Nothing about those first few moments suggested that the audition was about to become one of the most memorable performances of the season.
Even the judges could not have known what was coming.
Then Nene Royal picked up her guitar and started to play.
Within seconds, the shy teenager they had just been talking to seemed to disappear, replaced by a confident young rock musician who sang with power while attacking the guitar with remarkable energy. It was that sudden transformation that audiences connected with so strongly, because Nene did not simply sing a song — she showed a completely different side of herself as soon as the music began.
Nene, whose real name is reported as Rattikarn “Praew” Amloy, came to AGT from Phuket, Thailand, but this was far from her first experience performing in front of an audience. She had been playing guitar since childhood and had spent years performing at local markets, competing in music contests and playing with other young musicians.
Her connection with “Zombie” by The Cranberries makes the audition even more special. It was one of the first songs she learned as a child, long before she could have imagined performing it on an American television stage in front of millions of people.
From a Phuket Market to America’s Got Talent
Nene discovered the guitar almost by accident when she was around seven. She had wanted to join a computer science club at school, but it was already full, so she joined the music club instead. After receiving a guitar, she became fascinated with the instrument and began learning largely by watching videos, studying musicians she admired and practicing for hours.
As she grew older, she started performing around Phuket, including at Naka Weekend/Night Market, where she played with other young musicians. She also appeared on the Thai television show Super 10 in 2022 and competed in the Overdrive Guitar Contest in 2023, finishing as first runner-up.
She later became part of OZONE, a young Phuket rock band, performing as lead singer and guitarist. Her musical interests stretched far beyond The Cranberries, with her performances covering artists such as Metallica, Muse, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and System of a Down.
That background became obvious on AGT.
After her “Zombie” audition, Nene returned with Muse’s “Hysteria” for the Judges’ Callbacks before reaching the live rounds. For her quarterfinal performance, she chose Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”, once again showing that the first audition had not been a lucky moment.
The judges were impressed by the combination of her voice and guitar playing, and Mel B eventually pressed the Live Golden Buzzer, sending Nene directly into the finale.
The moment was emotional for Nene, who immediately hugged her father as golden confetti filled the stage.
The Guitar Had Already Traveled a Long Way
The guitar Nene played on AGT also has an interesting story.
She has frequently used a 1978 Ibanez Musician Series MC300, which was given to her in 2024 by Danish supporter Strit Bram after he encountered her performing in Phuket.
A guitar that had once been part of her local performances was suddenly appearing on one of America’s biggest television shows.
And Nene kept going.
For the AGT finale, she performed “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes, giving the song her own heavier rock treatment while playing guitar.
On September 23, 2026, the result was announced: Nene Royal had won America’s Got Talent Season 21, becoming the first Thai contestant to win the competition and receiving the show’s advertised $1 million grand prize.
But her finale week still had another surprise.
Nene performed with Linkin Park on “The Emptiness Machine,” sharing the stage with Emily Armstrong and Mike Shinoda. According to her father, she had only around three minutes of rehearsal with the band before the performance.
She also performed with The Warning, another band she has admired, joining Dany Villarreal for “Kerosene.”
For a teenager who had spent years playing guitar in Phuket, suddenly performing alongside internationally known rock musicians was an extraordinary step in her journey.
This Is Only the Beginning
Winning AGT may have introduced Nene to millions of people, but she already knows what she wants to do next. She has spoken about making original music, recording her own songs and eventually touring internationally, and she has said that some original material has already been recorded.
Her future schedule is beginning to reflect those ambitions. She is scheduled to open for Avenged Sevenfold in Singapore on October 13, 2026, and is also expected to appear at LOSO’s 30th-anniversary concert in Bangkok in November.
For audiences who watched that first audition, however, the image that will probably stay with them is much simpler: a quiet 16-year-old standing onstage, looking almost overwhelmed by the moment, before picking up her guitar and revealing a completely different side of herself.
That transformation lasted only seconds, but it was enough to make people stop and watch.
And now, after winning America’s Got Talent, the world is waiting to see what Nene Royal does when she picks up that guitar again.
