A young man in a simple black top stood on The X Factor stage with nothing but a microphone and a deeply personal story. His name was Josh Daniel, and although he didn’t win the competition, his audition became one of the show’s most remembered moments.
In 2015, Josh was 21 years old and working as a car mechanic in Billingham, County Durham. He loved singing and hoped The X Factor could give him an opportunity to follow his passion.
For his audition, Josh chose Labrinth’s “Jealous.” The song had a very personal meaning for him. Before singing, he explained that his best friend had passed away about two years earlier at just 18 years old.
Josh connected with the song through that loss. Rather than hearing it as a song about a relationship, he heard it as a reflection of missing someone he loved and wishing they could still be here.
Then the Judges Couldn’t Hold Back Tears
There was no elaborate staging or big production. Josh simply stood in front of the judges and delivered the song with a quiet but powerful emotion. When he finished, the audience gave him a standing ovation.
Simon Cowell was visibly moved. He appeared close to tears and struggled to compose himself before giving his comments.
The timing made the moment particularly emotional. Simon’s mother, Julie Brett, had died in July 2015 at the age of 89, only weeks before Josh’s audition. The Manchester auditions had also been postponed following her death.
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini was deeply affected as well and went onto the stage to hug Josh. Nick Grimshaw also praised the performance, while Rita Ora was absent from that particular audition because of a scheduling conflict.
Josh received the judges’ approval and continued through the competition. He reached Judges’ Houses in Nick Grimshaw’s category and performed Emeli Sandé’s “Clown,” but ultimately did not make the live shows.
His X Factor journey may have ended there, but his audition continued to reach people around the world.
Josh’s performance of “Jealous” became a viral sensation online. One YouTube upload eventually passed 113 million views, and clips of the audition have continued to be shared across social media.
Josh later continued pursuing music while also becoming involved in other professional and business activities, including work connected with Schott Packaging alongside business partner Tom Schott.
But for many viewers, Josh will always be remembered for that one audition.
He walked onto the stage as a 21-year-old mechanic hoping for a chance to sing. He didn’t win The X Factor, but he created a sincere and deeply emotional performance that people continued to discover and remember years later.
For those few minutes, it felt less like a television competition and more like a young man honoring the memory of someone he had lost through music.
