Before millions of viewers discovered his incredible voice, Michael Ketterer was known for something entirely different. As a pediatric mental health nurse, he spent his days helping children facing emotional and psychological challenges. At home, he and his wife, Ivey, were raising six children, including five adopted sons who had overcome incredibly difficult beginnings through foster care.
Born on August 21, 1977, and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Michael developed a love for music through church at an early age. He later became a worship leader, songwriter, and singer, but chose to build a career in healthcare instead of pursuing music full-time. For years, he balanced both callings, believing that nursing allowed him to care for people in one way while music allowed him to encourage and inspire them in another.

He performed with worship groups including United Pursuit and Influence Music, contributed to several worship albums, and released his own solo music, blending contemporary Christian, soul, and pop influences with messages of hope, faith, and perseverance.
In 2018, Michael auditioned for Season 13 of America’s Got Talent. Speaking with the judges before singing, he explained that he wasn’t chasing fame for himself. Instead, he wanted to inspire his children by showing them that impossible dreams can become reality. He explained that many children who grow up in foster care spend so much time trying to survive that they rarely get the chance to dream, and he hoped his journey would encourage them to believe in themselves.
For his audition, Michael performed the Bee Gees’ classic “To Love Somebody.” His emotional interpretation showcased not only his powerful voice but also the sincerity behind every lyric.
