A Voice Battle So Powerful, It Felt More Like a Live Concert Than a Competition

This was a battle, but they turned it into a concert—two voices, one unforgettable performance. Not a fight to win, but a moment to feel.

The Voice of Germany 2023 gave us many standout moments, but few performances struck such a deep emotional chord as when Joel Marques Cunha and Marc Altergott took the stage together for their battle round. Singing “Impossible”—a song already loaded with heartbreak and intensity—the two turned a singing competition into something far more intimate and powerful.

Their voices couldn’t be more different, yet they complemented each other like they were meant to share that stage. Joel brought soul, control, and emotional weight, while Marc offered vulnerability and an expressive tone that felt raw and real. It was the kind of performance where no one really wanted to see a loser. And for once, neither had to lose—both advanced, a rare move from their coaches Bill and Tom Kaulitz, who admitted they couldn’t choose.

This performance didn’t just trend for a day—it stayed with people. It was one of those moments that felt too good for TV.

Joel Marques Cunha

Joel, a kindergarten teacher from Luxembourg, was something of a dark horse when the season started. Quiet, humble, and soft-spoken, he let his voice do the talking—and what a voice. There’s something comforting about his tone, like he’s telling you a secret he’s been carrying for years. His performances always felt personal.

After the show, Joel didn’t disappear. In fact, he stepped into the next phase of his career with intention. He released a handful of singles—starting with “Stranger”, followed by “Believer”, which earned him third place in Luxembourg’s national selection for Eurovision 2024. Not bad for a guy who used to spend his days finger painting with toddlers.

In June 2025, he released “Oh My Love”, a heartfelt track that marks a shift toward a more defined sound. He’s not chasing trends—he’s telling stories, and building something slow and meaningful. He might not be on every radio station yet, but he’s on the right path. Sometimes the artists with the softest voices have the most to say.

Marc Altergott

Marc had already dipped his toes in the spotlight years earlier as a finalist on The Voice Kids in 2020. But coming into the adult version, now just 16, he was on a different mission—to prove that he wasn’t just a “kid with a good voice,” but an artist in his own right. And he did exactly that.

During the season, Marc’s control and sensitivity stood out. While others belted to impress, he sang to connect. His semifinal performance of “Stop and Stare” was a masterclass in restraint and emotional build. He didn’t win, but he earned something harder to get: respect.

Since the show, Marc has kept a relatively low profile. No big label deals or flashy singles just yet—but that doesn’t mean he’s vanished. At his age, time is his biggest asset. He’s likely working behind the scenes, figuring out who he is as an artist, and there’s no rush. Some voices take time to grow into their fullest expression.

The magic of that battle performance wasn’t just in the notes they hit, but in the way they lifted each other up. Joel and Marc didn’t fight to outshine one another—they leaned in, harmonized, and told a story together. In a world obsessed with competition, they showed what happens when two artists simply connect.

Not every performance lives on after the applause fades, but this one did. And for both singers, it was only the beginning.
