When 22-year-old Vernon Barnard walked onto the stage for his blind audition on The Voice South Africa in 2016, no one could’ve predicted how deeply his performance would move everyone in the room — and millions more around the world.
Vernon was born with glaucoma, a condition that severely damaged his eyesight. By the time he was five years old, he had already undergone 16 surgeries. Despite this, his vision continued to deteriorate until he became completely blind.
But even in darkness, Vernon found light in music.
The Judges Couldn’t Hold Back Their Tears

With just a mic in hand and his parents watching from backstage, Vernon chose a song that resonated deeply — “Story of My Life” by One Direction.
From the very first note, there was something different about this performance. His voice wasn’t just technically strong — it was filled with raw emotion, vulnerability, and truth. Every lyric felt lived-in, every word carried weight.
The audience was silent, holding their breath. And then one of the judges, Bobby van Jaarsveld, turned his chair — and immediately burst into tears.
Moments later, the other judges followed. Even seasoned artists like Lira and Karen Zoid were visibly moved, wiping away tears as they listened. The performance had gone far beyond expectations. It wasn’t just a good audition — it was a moment.
More Than Just a Voice
What made Vernon’s audition so unforgettable wasn’t only his talent — it was his story. Here was a young man who had every reason to give up on dreams like singing on a national stage, but instead chose to rise above the odds.
It didn’t matter that he couldn’t see the judges. They saw him, fully and completely, through his music.
His parents, watching from the wings, were overwhelmed with pride. One particularly emotional moment occurred when a man in the crowd was seen crying — it was later revealed his own father had been blind, making Vernon’s journey all the more personal and powerful for him.

Where Is Vernon Now?
Vernon’s audition quickly went viral, earning over 29 million views online. It struck a universal chord, reminding us all that talent knows no boundaries — not age, not sight, not circumstance.
Following his time on The Voice, Vernon continued pursuing music. He released original songs, including a debut single that received strong radio play. He also dropped an album titled “Deur Jou Oë” (“Through Your Eyes”), a fitting title for someone who helps others see the world differently through his voice.
He remains active in the music world and continues to inspire thousands with every performance.
A Voice That Couldn’t Be Ignored
Vernon Barnard didn’t just audition. He broke hearts, challenged perceptions, and gave new meaning to what a “blind audition” could be. His courage, talent, and authenticity left a mark that few performances ever do.
