Dolly Parton’s Voice Dazzles a 16-Year-Old Kelly Clarkson’s Soulful Serenade Will Be this Season’s Winner
She was born and raised in a small town in the Southwest, Farmington, New Mexico, where despite her short height and diminutive stature, she has a voice bigger than her size, and her blind audition for Season 15 of The Voice shocked everyone by introducing her to the world for the first time.
The blind audition song that Chevel chose for her audition was a 2010 hit by a band called “The Band Perr.” Though Chevel’s voice is visibly shaking due to nerves as she begins, it’s clear that she has talent hidden within her. In the first line of the song, Kelly Clarkson, the coach, noticed this, and within a few lines of the song, she slammed her button and turned her chair, and as Chevel’s naturally raspy voice developed, Blake Shelton decided that he wanted to be a part of this talent contest.
Jennifer Hudson, the next judge, turned her chair for Chevel, leaving judge Adam Levine to be the only one who didn’t do so, as the petite powerhouse gained confidence and filled the auditorium with her voice. As she grew in confidence, her voice filled the auditorium and her voice filled the room, so did Jennifer Hudson. The judges were left stunned and clearly impressed by Chevel’s audition performance. Chevel was clearly nervous at first, according to Kelly Clarkson, who said, “You were in your head a lot…but I’d love to work with you.” She even complimented Chevel and compared her voice to that of Dolly Parton.
Additionally, Chevel’s voice was praised by the remaining judges, Jennifer Hudson describing it as “pure and beautiful,” and Blake predicting “there is going to be a lot of growth for you on this show…” And was he ever right! Chevel’s voice grew stronger and stronger each week as she gained experience and confidence.
The show started out as some friendly competition between Blake and Kelly as they were trying to convince Chevel to join their team. When Chevel unexpectedly decides to choose Kelly Clarkson as her mentor, Kelly Clarkson was the ideal mentor for Chevel, who went on to win the season finale on December 19.
Having won The Voice, Chevel has already experienced an amazing journey, as she stated soon after, “It’s been crazy just getting the chance to participate”. In my opinion, there are not many teenagers or 16-year-olds who have the opportunity to stand on The Voice stage and sing for the rest of the world on national television while being mentored by Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, and Thomas Rhett. It’s just been incredible and life-changing.”
