Stephen “Steve” Barry, a 31-year-old singer from County Kerry, made a strong impression on Ireland’s Got Talent with his audition of “Somewhere” from West Side Story. The performance drew attention for its technical precision and calm, controlled delivery, demonstrating Barry’s ability to convey emotion without relying on theatrics.
From the moment he began singing, the audience was silent, focused entirely on his voice. Barry’s performance balanced power and clarity, giving each note a steady and expressive quality. When he finished, the theater erupted in applause, and he received a full standing ovation. All four judges voted in his favor, sending him through to the next round. Judge Denise van Outen, a professional with extensive musical theatre experience, said she didn’t want the performance to end and praised Barry’s voice as exceptional.

“Somewhere”, written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, is a demanding piece known for its emotional depth and wide vocal range. Barry’s rendition stayed true to the song’s hopeful message while highlighting his clear, warm tenor.
Barry advanced to the semi-finals, where he performed “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers. Although he did not win the competition, his performances confirmed his strong presence as a professional singer.
Before appearing on the show, Barry studied musical theatre at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, earning a master’s degree. He has performed in stage productions and also sang publicly in Covent Garden, London, where he gained attention for a spontaneous duet of “All I Ask of You” with West End performer Celinde Schoenmaker.
Since Ireland’s Got Talent, Barry has continued performing professionally, working in both musical theatre and classical crossover. He is represented by the UK-based agency Barry Ball Artists and performs at concerts and theatre events across Ireland and the UK.
Barry’s performances are notable for their clarity, authenticity, and emotional connection, offering audiences a direct experience of the music without over-stylization. His audition of “Somewhere” remains one of the most memorable of his season, reflecting both his skill and dedication as a singer.
